RSV and influenza are both major respiratory viruses, but should we really think of their epidemics as independent from one another? In this episode of The A–Z of RSV, host Marta Nunes speaks with mathematical modeller Matthieu Domenech de Celles about the similarities and differences between RSV and influenza, why their seasonal patterns vary around the world, and the emerging evidence that these viruses may interact. The conversation explores the different factors that shape respiratory virus epidemics, from population immunity and human contact patterns to temperature and humidity. Matthieu explains how mathematical models can help researchers investigate interactions between viruses and distinguish these effects from other factors influencing epidemic dynamics. The episode also looks at evidence suggesting that infection with one respiratory virus may temporarily influence susceptibility to another. Marta and Matthieu discuss why understanding these interactions could be important for disease surveillance, epidemic forecasting and the evaluation of prevention strategies, including vaccination. As new preventive options for respiratory viruses become available, could looking beyond individual pathogens help us better understand, and potentially better predict, their impact at population level?
