This scenic summer drive from Tbilisi to the historic Ananuri Fortress follows one of Georgia’s most beautiful routes, beginning in the vibrant capital and leading deep into the foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The journey combines peaceful villages, river valleys, forested hills, and turquoise mountain waters, all under a bright blue June sky that highlights the natural beauty of eastern Georgia.
Your trip starts in Tbilisi, a city rich in culture, ancient architecture, and lively streets that blend modern energy with traditional Georgian charm. As you leave the capital, the surroundings gradually shift from dense neighborhoods to open landscapes and gentle hills. At 04:50, you reach Zahesi (ზაჰესი), an old hydroelectric district located along the Mtkvari River. It marks the transition from the city into the quieter northern outskirts, where the air becomes fresher and the terrain more spacious.
You continue on E60, one of Georgia’s main east–west highways, before merging onto E117, which leads toward the Greater Caucasus. The scenery begins to open dramatically, with rolling hills, forested slopes, and distant mountain ridges. At 16:30, you arrive in Natakhtari (ნატახტარი), a well-known village famous for its mineral water brand and local restaurants serving traditional Georgian dishes. The area is surrounded by green fields and distant mountain silhouettes that add to the rural beauty of the drive.
A few minutes later, at 19:00, you enter Misaktsieli (მისაქციელი), a village with peaceful residential streets, agricultural lands, and tree-lined sections of the road. The mountains in the distance appear closer here, and the valley begins to narrow slightly. At 23:50, you reach Naoza (ნაოზა), a small village nestled between wooded hills, known for its calm atmosphere and picturesque countryside landscapes.
Continuing at 25:16, the road brings you into Tsitelsopeli (წითელსოფელი), whose name translates to “Red Village.” It is surrounded by earthy-toned hills, orchards, and rural homes that reflect the traditional lifestyle of eastern Georgia. The next village, Bodorna (ბოდორნა) at 31:00, sits at the base of forested mountain slopes and is famous for the Bodorna Rock Column, a natural stone pillar that has historical and religious significance.
At 32:10, you pass through Aragvispiri (არაგვისპირი), located along the Aragvi River valley. The river begins to appear more prominently, flowing between green hills and rocky slopes. The road here is scenic and peaceful, offering wide views of the valley. By 35:07, you reach Bichnigauri (ბიჩნიგაური), a small settlement surrounded by dense vegetation and foothills that hint at the proximity of the Caucasus range.
As you continue, the landscape becomes more dramatic. At 36:40, you arrive in Zhinvali (ჟინვალი), followed shortly by Kvemo Aranisi (ქვემო არანისი) at 37:18, both located near one of the most stunning landmarks of this route. The road approaches the glowing turquoise waters of the Zhinvali Reservoir, a vast mountain lake fed by the Aragvi River. The combination of deep blue water, forested mountains, and curving roads creates one of the most photogenic scenes in Georgia.
At 39:26, you pass the Monument of the 300 Aragvians, a memorial dedicated to Georgian fighters who defended their homeland in the 17th century. From here, the reservoir becomes fully visible, shining brightly under the summer sun. At 40:04, the road runs parallel to the shoreline, giving breathtaking panoramic views perfect for filming.
Your journey continues along the edge of the water until you reach Ananuri (ანანური) at 49:17, home to the legendary Ananuri Fortress Complex, one of Georgia’s most iconic historical sites. The stone towers, ancient churches, and defensive walls overlook the luminous reservoir, creating a remarkable blend of history and natural beauty. At 50:25, the drone footage captures the fortress from above, showcasing the panoramic mountain landscape, medieval architecture, and the sparkling Zhinvali waters from a stunning aerial perspective.
This route from Tbilisi to Ananuri is a perfect summer drive through the heart of Georgia’s mountain scenery, offering a blend of history, nature, and unforgettable views
