Only 1.5% of Romans could afford a home with running water. Everyone else — a bricklayer, a beggar, a senator's cousin — was stacked into towering, crumbling apartment blocks called insulae, hauling water up five flights of stairs every single day, hoping the building wouldn't catch fire before dinner.
This is what daily life in Ancient Rome actually looked like — not the marble, not the emperors, but the wooden stairs, the thin walls, the shared baths, and the hot meal bought from a stranger on the corner.
In this video, we walk through a single day in the life of an ordinary Roman: the dawn scramble to greet your patron, the fast-food counters on every street corner, the citywide siesta shutdown, the packed public baths where a beggar and a senator could sit in the same warm water, and the strange sense of community that held it all together despite the danger.
Two thousand years later, the insulae are gone, and the baths are ruins gulls circle over. But the pattern underneath it all — food, warmth, water, and company — hasn't changed at all. We just built better plumbing.
