Beta oxidation of fatty acids is the major pathway for energy production from lipids and is a high-yield topic in MBBS biochemistry exams. In this video, beta oxidation is explained from the very basics — starting with the structure of fatty acids, carbon numbering systems (delta, omega, and Greek alphabet), and classification into short, medium, long, and very long chain fatty acids.
You will clearly understand where beta oxidation occurs, why it does not occur in brain, RBCs, and adrenal medulla, and how fatty acids are activated in the cytosol by acyl-CoA synthetase (thiokinase) using ATP.
A major highlight of this lecture is the carnitine shuttle mechanism, which is essential for transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix. The roles of CPT-I, translocase, and CPT-II are explained in a logical, stepwise manner — making regulation by malonyl-CoA very easy to remember.
The four reactions of beta oxidation proper are described in detail:
• First oxidation (FAD-dependent)
• Hydration
• Second oxidation (NAD-dependent)
• Thiolysis producing acetyl-CoA
Special emphasis is given to enzyme names, cofactors, and exam-relevant points.
Finally, the video explains regulation of beta oxidation, metabolic integration with gluconeogenesis, and a complete ATP calculation for palmitic acid, including both new (106 ATP) and old (129 ATP) conventions — a common source of student confusion.
This lecture is ideal for university exams, NEET PG, FMGE, and conceptual clarity in lipid metabolism.
