# Tired of Being Interpreted - Tolu Sarah Johnson

A Song from Tolu to Everyone, on Jesus’ Behalf Verse 1 I asked Him once, “Do You ever get tired of being interpreted?” He didn't hesitate. *“All the time.”* Everyone has an explanation of Jesus. What He meant. What He thinks. What He wants. Who He loves. Who He doesn't. People who have never asked Him a question will tell you exactly who He is. And I couldn't help wondering— with everybody speaking for Him, *who is listening to Him?* Pre-Chorus We've heard what others say. We've inherited their conclusions. But what if, for once, we let Jesus *speak for Himself?* Chorus **He's tired of being interpreted.** Tired of meeting the version of Himself somebody else explained. We've spent centuries telling one another *who Jesus is.* We've studied Him. Defended Him. Argued over Him. Quoted Him. But after all this talking about Him, **does anybody want to know Him?** Not the idea. Not the interpretation. *Him.* Verse 2 Imagine entering a room where everybody already knows you. Or thinks they do. Some adore you. Some fear you. Some are angry with you. Some decided years ago they never want to know you. And there you stand, listening to strangers explain your own heart. Wouldn't you eventually say, **“Does anybody want to ask Me?”** Because underneath everything we've made of His name, Jesus still wants *to be known.* Pre-Chorus Ask Him. Question Him. Disagree with Him. Tell Him what you've heard. Bring the questions you were told you shouldn't ask. At least then, *you're talking to Him.* Chorus **He's tired of being interpreted.** Tired of meeting the version of Himself somebody else explained. We've spent centuries telling one another *who Jesus is.* We've praised Him. Blamed Him. Quoted Him. Rejected Him. But how many of us *have asked to know Him?* Not the reputation. Not somebody else's Jesus. *Him.* Bridge Imagine having your name enter every room before you do. Imagine hearing your heart explained by people who never asked you. Imagine watching someone walk away from you when the person they are walking away from *isn't even you.* Maybe that's one of the loneliest parts. Not being questioned. Not being disagreed with. Not even being misunderstood. But being spoken about *without being spoken to.* We asked everyone else, *“Who is Jesus?”* And everyone answered. Final Chorus **He's tired of being interpreted.** So maybe we could stop for a moment. Before another explanation. Another argument. Another conclusion about who He is. Ask Him. What are You really like? What have we gotten wrong about You? What do You wish we understood? What have we said in Your name that You never wanted said? And then, *let Him answer.* Because after centuries of talking about Jesus, perhaps it's time *we talked to Him.* Outro And please— **don't take my interpretation either.** Ask Him. I can tell you what He said to me. I can tell you what I've discovered. But I cannot know Him *for you.* So ask Him your own questions. Listen for your own answers. Give Him the dignity we would give anyone we genuinely wanted to know: **the chance to speak for Himself.** Because maybe Jesus doesn't need another interpreter.
