Welcome to Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China — a city where the vast spirit of the grasslands meets the vibrant energy of everyday street life.
In this episode, we explore two of Hohhot’s popular food destinations: Kuanxiangzi Food Street and the Inner Mongolia University Night Market. From traditional local specialties to trendy late-night snacks loved by students and young locals, more than a hundred different foods come together in one unforgettable street food journey.
Our first stop is Kuanxiangzi, where some of Hohhot’s most distinctive traditional flavors can be found.
One of the must-try local foods is shaomai, famous for its delicate wrapper and juicy, savory filling. Freshly cooked crispy beef pies are golden on the outside and tender inside, while rich and creamy cheese milk-tofu pancakes bring together Inner Mongolia’s famous dairy traditions with modern street food.
We also discover sesame-filled baked buns with flavorful meat, crispy fried lamb leg, sizzling grilled oysters, and fragrant Xinjiang-style naan bread cooked until beautifully golden.
For something sweeter, there are soft and chewy yellow millet cakes, fragrant red date cakes, and a variety of dairy-based desserts that reflect the unique flavors of northern China and Inner Mongolia.
As night falls, we head to the lively Inner Mongolia University Night Market, where the atmosphere becomes even more energetic.
Here, traditional flavors meet modern Chinese street food. Crispy potatoes mixed with spicy fire noodles deliver an intense combination of crunch, heat and rich seasoning. Freshly grilled cold noodles are soft and chewy with a sweet-and-tangy sauce, while crispy fried eggplant offers a satisfying contrast between its crunchy exterior and tender center.
The night market is also packed with fried chicken strips, takoyaki, rolled cold noodles, sizzling squid, barbecue skewers, fried snacks, noodles, desserts and countless other street foods.
Walking through these crowded food streets, the sound of sizzling grills, the aroma of lamb and spices, and the glow of night-market lights create one of the most authentic ways to experience daily life in Hohhot.
From traditional lamb dishes, shaomai and Mongolian-style dairy foods to grilled cold noodles, spicy noodles and sizzling seafood, Hohhot’s night markets show how grassland flavors, northern Chinese cuisine and modern street food culture come together in one city.
If you enjoy authentic Chinese street food, bustling night markets, traditional local cuisine and everyday city life, this Hohhot food adventure is for you.
Join us as we walk through the crowds, follow the smoke rising from the grills, and discover just how delicious the nights of Inner Mongolia, China can be.
