Friends, sugar and rice prices could see a significant increase over the next few days. Following Raju Shetti’s protest, sugarcane prices have now been fixed at ₹4,200 per tonne in the three districts of Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara. Following this development, traders have also approached the government, demanding that sugar prices be increased from ₹31 to ₹42 per kilogram, arguing that they too should receive support similar to that extended to sugarcane farmers. Meanwhile, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released its global food price index report for October. According to the report, sugar prices have increased for the fourth consecutive month. More importantly, the sugar price index has risen by 7.5 points compared to September and is now 28.8% higher than in October last year. At the same time, the central government has tightened monitoring of rice stocks and agreed to introduce stock limits, as required, in five southern states until January 31, 2027. So, what exactly is happening with sugar and rice prices? How much could prices increase, and what steps is the government taking to control the situation? That is what we will examine in this video.
