On the night of July 25, 1943, Rome Radio interrupted its programming with an announcement that changed the course of World War II. Mussolini was gone. Arrested, replaced, and moved to a location the Italian government refused to disclose.
Within hours, crowds in Rome were tearing fascist symbols off buildings. But at Hitler's military headquarters in East Prussia, the reaction was very different. Berlin radio went silent. The propaganda ministry scrambled. And Hitler gave an order that would launch one of the most desperate intelligence operations of the entire war: find Mussolini, wherever the Italians had hidden him.
What followed was a seven-week hunt across secret prisons, Mediterranean islands, and intercepted radio signals, ending at an isolated mountaintop hotel that German commandos could only reach by glider.
