East Lancashire Railway 'Legends of Steam III' 2026. All footage filmed on Friday 10th & Saturday 11th April 2026.
The ELR held the third edition of their 'Legends of Steam' gala over the 10th-12th April with four locomotive icons in steam operating an intensive timetable. Headlining the event was No. 60163 Tornado from the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, appearing alongside No. 34070 Manston from the Swanage Railway. Representing the ELR’s home fleet was No. 34092 City of Wells and the 145-year-old Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway tank locomotive No. 11456.
An intensive timetable was implemented to maximise locomotive mileage over the three days. Highlights of the programme included mixed parcels trains, shuttle services, non-stop runs and double-headed workings, most notably on Friday morning and Saturday evening when both 'Bulleids' teamed up to haul a double-headed service. Another key feature of the event was the 1960s goods demonstration train, hauled by Tornado. This operated on both Friday and Sunday mornings between Bury Bolton Street and Rawtenstall, recreating the sight of a fast freight working. Two of the locomotives also received minor cosmetic changes for the event, No. 60163 "Tornado" had various features on the front end painted black to more accurately depict how the class would've appeared in the 1960s to go alongside various headboards. Meanwhile, No. 34092 "City of Wells" had various features on it's front end painted white, rather than black, to reflect how two of members of the class would've appeared in the final days of steam on the Somerset & Dorset Railway.
