Britain's New Jet Engine Runs on Household Trash — And It's Shocking Everyone #UK #SustainableAviationFuel #Technology On the 15th of November 2023, a Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine ran at full power in Derby on fuel made from household rubbish, and the engine did not care. One hundred percent sustainable aviation fuel, not a blend, running a widebody engine at takeoff thrust. Two British companies, Velocys and Firefly Green Fuels, are attacking the feedstock problem from opposite ends, one using municipal waste, the other using human sewage, while Britain wrote a legal mandate that forces airlines to buy the fuel before the factories are even built. In this video, we trace the path from a Rolls-Royce engine test in Derby running on fuel made from bin bags, through the physics that trapped aviation in fossil kerosene for 80 years, to two British companies attacking the problem with waste and sewage, the UK government mandate that creates a guaranteed market, the investment and infrastructure moving toward commercial scale, and the honest assessment of timelines, costs, feedstock limits and global competition before Britain's 10-year deadline to build the factories or import the fuel from abroad. Britain did not wait for better batteries or hydrogen dreams. It wrote a legal mandate and pointed it at the bin lorry. 🔍 TOPICS COVERED Rolls-Royce, Trent 1000, Derby, Velocys, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, Altalto, Immingham, Humber, Phillips 66 Humber Refinery, British Airways, Shell, Firefly Green Fuels, Gloucestershire, DLR, Trent XWB, Airbus A350, Boeing 787, Trent 7000, Airbus A330neo, Pearl, Jet Zero Council, Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate, Advanced Fuels Fund, Jet Zero Strategy, World Energy, Neste 📜 SOURCES Rolls-Royce, Trent 1000 test on 100% SAF, 15 November 2023 Rolls-Royce, announcement that all in-production civil engines compatible with 100% SAF, late 2023 Velocys, Altalto project announcement, 2018 British Airways and Velocys, offtake agreement and Shell partnership, 2019 Firefly Green Fuels, DLR laboratory test results, 2023 Rolls-Royce, total of over 5,000 hours testing on fuels containing SAF, January 2023 🏭 ABOUT THIS CHANNEL Britain Uncovered makes long-form documentaries about the inventions, laboratories and industrial decisions shaping Britain's future.
