RETAIL (HYPER-)REALITY - What do we mean when we feel-, see- and talk about a place as being 'authentic' or 'real'? More often than not, what we are talking about as being 'original' or 'true' are carefully staged experiences that simulate our shared, romantic ideas of the original. A highly stylized version of a cozy café or popular taqueria. The experience might not have an original, at all. Jean Baudrillard talked of such manifestations as 'simulacra,' creating a sort of 'hyperreality' in which we feel more comfortable, entertained and secure than in the 'real reality' itself. Intrigued? Take a look for yourself and tell us about your own encounters with retail "(hyper-)reality". Reading New York's streetscapes for clues to how Urban Retail Placemaking works is what we do in the eponymous course at Columbia Business School.
