This is part four of four, and the last one. The Subject Module is ninety of the dMAT's one hundred and sixty-five minutes — longer than all three Core subtests put together — and it is the part almost nobody prepares for, because you do not get to choose which of the eight subject areas turns up. So we do twenty questions across four of them, and each text teaches you one technique for getting at the answer faster. WHAT'S IN THIS VIDEO The official instructions, on screen, from page 33 of the preparation document Two official questions from Exercise 1, solved together Four texts of our own: humanities, natural sciences, engineering and computational sciences — five questions each, harder than the official set Four techniques, every one of them derived from an official exercise THE FOUR TECHNIQUES 1. The sentence that decides — every answer is a sentence in the text. Find it before you judge the option, and read the "because", not just the conclusion. 2. Split the option — when an option makes two claims, it is wrong if either half is wrong. Be sure of one half and let it kill the rest. 3. Move the lever — read a formula as proportions, not as arithmetic. What is on top grows the answer, what is underneath shrinks it, and the exponent is how hard. 4. Type, then size, then value — decide what kind of thing the answer must be, then roughly how big, and only then compute. WHAT THE MODULE ACTUALLY ASKS Page 5 of the official document is precise about this: the subject modules require "subject knowledge and application skills, but not memorized factual knowledge." Every constant, formula and definition a question depends on is printed in the text in front of you. That is what makes these techniques work. Ninety minutes for the whole subject test. Four options per question, exactly one correct. You may not take notes. And if you do not know an answer, the official instructions ask you to guess — so never leave a blank.
