🎼 ORPHEUS — He Who Sang to the Dead
Eternal Gods Vol.31 · Full Album
He made a river rise just to listen.
He made the ferryman of the dead put down his pole and weep.
He made the king of the underworld say yes — and he still lost her twice.
Eternal Gods is a cinematic mythology album series. Each volume gives one figure from Greek myth twelve songs and twelve images: a full concept album built around a single life, from the first sound they ever made to the last thing left of them.
Orpheus was handed a lyre and discovered that the world answered it. Rivers rose, fish followed the water into the air, and on the deck of the Argo his voice held the crew when the Sirens sang. Then he married Eurydice under a wedding torch that would not catch, and a snake in the evening grass took her before the smoke had cleared. So he walked down. The ferryman wept and carried him across. The dead stopped to listen. The king of the underworld leaned forward off his throne and granted him one condition — do not look back. One step from the light, he looked. The second loss left no door to open. On a hill in Thrace the women's voices finally drowned his own, and the river carried what was left of him under a sky where his lyre had already become stars.
Musically this volume moves from Circe's soprano to a tenor lead, with a soprano countermelody as Eurydice. The lyre is not background here — the harp plays the story, with strings and stone reverb built around it. The descent (06–09) turns to low brass and pipe organ and peaks at the throne of Hades, and on track 11 the lead voice is finally buried under a female chant and cut off mid-phrase.
