Something to Do Forever ★ TITLE TRACK Sisyphus begins on the walls of Corinth with dry earth in his hand and a city below him that has no water. From that same wall he sees an eagle carry a girl in white toward the sea, and he says nothing about it — until her father, a river god, comes looking for her. He points at a rock, names what he saw, and water comes up through the split stone and wets both their feet. His city gets a spring. He gets everything that follows. Death comes for him that night with a chain, and he does not close the door. He asks to be shown how the chain works, and death is the one who ends up wearing it. For a year after that nothing on earth can end. Men sit up on the battlefield and look down at themselves. The very old stand on the hills and wait for something that never arrives. It takes a god in armour to break the chain and put a hand on his arm — and even then, before he goes, he holds his wife's hands and leaves her one last instruction. Do not bury me. Below, he kneels in front of a throne and asks for a few days to go back and scold her for it, and he is given them. He does not come back. He grows old in his own vineyard with a cup in his hand and a whole city underneath him, until one afternoon a traveller is standing in the doorway behind him. The last two songs are the hill. The rock leaves his hands three steps from the top, and in the morning it is waiting at his feet again. The album does not end on the failure.
