ETERNAL GODS Vol.39 — MIDAS He Who Got What He Asked For He found an old man asleep in his roses and did not have him thrown out. For that kindness a god let him name anything he wanted, and he named gold. Nothing went wrong. He was given exactly what he asked for. A ten-track cinematic opera album — a sleeping satyr, ten days of feasting, a wish spoken out loud, bread too heavy to eat, a girl running across a hall, and a river carrying the gold away. 🎵 TRACKLIST 00:00 00. He Who Got What He Asked For ★ TITLE TRACK It begins in a rose garden in Phrygia, late in the afternoon. An old satyr lies asleep among the bushes and the servants do not dare touch him. The king looks down at the stranger and lets him stay. Ten days later the old man is still at his table, laughing at the head of it, and the king is still pouring. Nothing in this album is a punishment for cruelty. Everything that follows begins with a man being kind to someone who had wandered into the wrong garden. The god comes to the gate in the morning to pay for it. Name anything, he says, and the king holds out both hands and asks that everything he touches turn to gold. Neither the god nor the old satyr says a word to stop him. It is the only moment in this album that he chooses. And it works. In the same garden where he found the sleeping man, a rose hardens under his fingers, then a branch, then a stone at his feet, and he laughs — the only time in these ten songs that he is happy. By evening the bread hangs heavy and dead in his hand and the wine has set solid in the cup. He has lost nothing yet. He simply cannot live. Then a child runs the length of the hall to reach him, and his arms are already open when she stops moving. He kneels on the temple steps that night with his hands raised and away from everything, and asks for it to be taken back. At dawn he stands in the Pactolus with both hands under the water, and the gold runs off his fingers and settles into the riverbed. It does not disappear. It only moves. The album ends in the hall the next morning: the girl still standing where she stopped, her father sitting in front of her, his hands harmless now and nothing coming back. ▶ A new cinematic mythology album every week.
