He set a record no running back has come close to in almost twenty years. It ended his career. In 2006, Larry Johnson carried the football 416 times. It is the most any running back has ever been asked to carry it in a single NFL season, and no one has touched the number since. For two years in Kansas City he was the most punishing runner in football: a Heisman finalist out of Penn State, buried for years behind Priest Holmes, then unleashed into back-to-back seasons almost nobody could stop. Then Herm Edwards fed him 416 times, the body gave out, and the fall was almost instant. A holdout, a payday, a season-ending foot injury, and within a few years the man who owned the most brutal record in the sport was out of the league entirely. Today he is a trivia answer with numbers most fans have forgotten. This is the story of how a franchise built a monster and used him up, and of why the NFL treats even its greatest running backs as parts to be replaced. Told straight, football only. His two-year peak sits right next to a Hall of Famer's. Almost no one remembers it happened. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 – The Record That Destroyed Him 0:40 – Buried Behind a Superstar 2:30 – The Door Finally Opens 3:30 – 416: The Weapon and the Warning 4:40 – Paid, Then Broken 5:30 – The Fall 6:20 – It Was Never Just the Coach 7:20 – The Verdict ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Who do you blame, the coach or the league?
