He never missed a start. The Titans still threw him away.
Eddie George started 130 straight games to open his NFL career, the most ever by a running back. He carried the ball 300 or more times for eight straight seasons, something no running back in NFL history has ever done. He ran for 10,009 yards for the Oilers and Titans, still the franchise record. In January 2004 he dislocated his shoulder in a playoff game in Baltimore, told the team doctor to throw a harness on it, and helped Tennessee win.
Six months later, the Titans wanted to cut his pay. When he said no, they let him go.
This is the story of how Tennessee used up the most durable running back of his era. It starts with the two goal-line fumbles that got him booed as an Ohio State freshman, then the 314-yard game and the Heisman Trophy. It runs through 403 carries in 2000 and the Ray Lewis interception everyone thought broke him, to the workload that actually did.
Only two running backs in NFL history have reached 10,000 rushing yards without missing a start. One is Jim Brown. The other is still waiting on Canton.
Did the Titans wear Eddie George out, or did he wear out every defense first? Is 10,000 yards without missing a start enough for the Hall of Fame? Tell us in the comments.
