LNER Tyne Valley Line diversions at Hexham & Prudhoe [H] | 03/10/2026

This September/early-October, an annually occurring set of blockades of the East Coast Main Line's northern stretch was in place suspending services between Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley for major engineering work to take place. Services on the consecutive affected weekends were mostly withdrawn or curtailed at Newcastle for most operators; the only trains travelling north-east away from Newcastle being towards Ashington or Heaton Maintenance Depot. LNER, however, upheld its services connecting to the Scottish capital and highlands by running one train-per-hour in each direction onto the West Coast Main Line, doubling the journey time between Newcastle and Edinburgh with an additional set-down only stop at Carlisle to benefit passengers travelling to Glasgow. They utilised their bi-mode fleet of Class 800 'Azuma' trains to achieve this, due to the Tyne Valley Line between Newcastle and Carlisle being unelectrified as you can see, despite operating the odd, primarily electric, Class 801 coupled with an 800. Visit the main channel    / @pointarail   Notices: 1N69 was delayed as a result of earlier trespassers on the line at Sunderland Station, and therefore being positioned behind an all-stop Tyne & Wear Metro service. This did not delay 1S20 as it appeared at Prudhoe early and had delay recovery minutes in place within its timetable.
