An 1874 Moonlit Night That Feels Like a Memory | Classical Music

Step inside a real painting from 1874 and stay for an hour. Rain beats against the tall windows of a gothic hall, and a fire burns low beneath a painting above the mantel: A Moonlit Lane by John Atkinson Grimshaw. Then the hall falls away and you are standing in the lane itself. Bare trees against the moon, the wet road shining gold, and a mother and child walking home beside the old stone wall. No one knows who they are. Grimshaw walked these lanes at night with his wife, and here he left a mother and her child, walking home toward the light. Grimshaw, the Victorian painter of moonlight, taught himself to paint and spent his life on the light of wet roads at night. The painting is shown exactly as he painted it; only the camera moves.
