Step inside a real painting from 1888 and stay for an hour.
A night train pulls into Arles, and on the wall of the station café hangs The Night Café by Vincent van Gogh. Then the painting opens and you walk in from the street: rain running down the tall windows, the street lamps glowing outside, a candle and a cup of coffee waiting on your table, the lamps humming low over an empty room.
In September 1888 Van Gogh sat up three nights to paint the Café de la Gare, a café by the station that stayed open all night, where night wanderers took refuge when they couldn't pay for a room. He wrote to his brother Theo that he had tried to express "the terrible passions of humanity" by means of red and green. That November, Gauguin came to live and work with him in Arles and painted the same café, with Madame Ginoux, who ran it, at her table. His painting hangs on the wall beside Van Gogh's.
The café interior is a reimagined scene inspired by the painting. The painting itself is shown exactly as Van Gogh painted it.
One hour of quiet, melancholic Chopin, for reading, studying, writing and quiet evenings.
