THE ROAD NORTH: THE CROSSING TO GRANDE CACHE Day 10 of Expedition Alaska takes me through one of the most spectacular stretches of road I've ever experienced - the northern half of the legendary Icefields Parkway. I leave Saskatchewan River Crossing on a cold, wet morning, knowing I have roughly 250 miles ahead of me to Grande Cache. The weather is completely different from yesterday. Clouds roll across the peaks, rain begins to fall, and visibility changes constantly. Along the way, I navigate the shifting moods of the mountains, tracking the Weeping Wall, the massive Athabasca Glacier, Stutfield Glacier, and the stunning Athabasca Falls. The wilderness delivers incredible encounters with bighorn sheep and an amazing black bear right beside the road. Somewhere along the road toward Dawson Creek, I hit a massive personal milestone - crossing 10,000 miles on my BMW R1300 GS exactly one year to the day after getting the bike. The destination can wait. Sometimes the best moments happen when you slow down, pull over, and take it all in. Tomorrow, we hit Dawson Creek - Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway.
