The Right to Self-Determination: A Genealogy in Contemporary International Law Every people has the right to shape its own future. But does this right extend to independence and secession, even against the will of an existing state? The right to self-determination stands at the intersection of human rights, state sovereignty, and territorial integrity. While international law recognizes the freedom of peoples to determine their political, economic, social, and cultural future, the scope and limits of this right remain deeply contested. Beyond its historical role in decolonization, self-determination raises fundamental questions about political participation, autonomy, independence, and the legal boundaries of secession. In this specialized interview, the Human Rights Institute of the University of Isfahan (HRIUI) speaks with Dr. Sattar Azizi, faculty member in the Department of International Law at Tarbiat Modares University, about the legal foundations and contemporary challenges of self-determination. Drawing on the UN Charter, international legal principles, and the jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice, Dr. Azizi examines the distinction between internal and external self-determination, unilateral and remedial secession, the status of de facto entities, and the complex relationship between the rights of peoples and the territorial integrity of states. At the heart of this conversation lies a crucial question: How can international law protect the genuine will of peoples without allowing self-determination to become a justification for territorial fragmentation, or sovereignty to become a shield for discrimination and political exclusion? --- Human Rights Institute of the University of Isfahan (HRIUI)
