This is a true story about Pat Breitkreuz, an 83-year-old widow from Westfield, Indiana, who went online hoping to find companionship after losing her husband. There, she met a man calling himself Lewis, a supposed construction businessman from Montreal. Through months of affectionate messages, promises of love, and plans to finally meet, Pat gradually trusted the man behind the screen. Then the requests for money began. She ultimately sent five checks totaling $98,547 before Lewis presented an investment contract demanding another $500,000. Suspicious, Pat drove more than 100 miles to investigate the Indiana business address listed on the document—and discovered the company was not there. This devastating romance scam shows how online dating fraud, emotional manipulation, fake identities, and financial exploitation can target older adults.
