The Boston Medium in Her Legend First Appeared 45 Years After Her FUNERAL: Sarah Winchester Every tour of the Winchester Mystery House tells the same story. A grieving widow, heir to the rifle that won the West, visits a medium in Boston and is told that the spirits of everyone killed by a Winchester rifle are coming for her. So she buys a farmhouse in San Jose and keeps the hammers going for thirty-eight years. But the paper trail behind that story leads somewhere else. The first newspaper version, in 1895, mentions no ghosts at all. Her dividends came to about twenty-one dollars a day, not a thousand. On April 18, 1906, a seven-story tower came down on top of her, and instead of building faster, she stopped. Her will never mentioned the house. Nine months after her funeral, strangers were selling tickets to it. And the medium who started it all has a name nobody can find in the records of his own city.
