Remember when driving an electric car felt like a gamble? Crawling along the motorway, running out of battery in the middle of nowhere, stopping again and again to charge. Those worries are now largely a thing of the past. The same transition is starting at sea, and offshore wind farms are one of the most likely places for it to take off. In this video, Simon Stark, CTO of DMEC, explains how offshore charging works, which vessels can go electric and what still stands in the way. In this video: Why maritime transport is hard to decarbonise, and how cheaper, better batteries are changing that What offshore chargers are: from 1 to 2 MW for smaller vessels up to 8 MW or more for larger ones, either lowered from a platform or picked up from the water Which vessels go first: crew transfer vessels (CTVs) and service operation vessels (SOVs), with fully electric designs such as Damen's SOV 7017 Electric already on the market Why offshore wind farms are a natural starting point: fixed routes between port and wind farm, operators who want greener operations, and a grid already on site Charging from existing infrastructure, such as transition pieces and substations, or from new charging buoys and stations What still needs to happen: cost reduction and standardisation, so chargers can also serve emergency tow vessels, fishing vessels and other ships DMEC works on these questions through OASIS, an accelerator programme for system integration innovations around the North Sea, including offshore electrification and vessel charging.
