Most of the world's offshore wind potential sits in waters too deep for bottom-fixed foundations. Floating wind can reach those waters, but the sector is still in its pre-commercial phase. So what will it take to scale up? DMEC's Benjamin Lehner sits down with Minja Mihajlovic, DMEC's floating wind expert, to talk about the technology, the market, the bottlenecks and the environmental picture. Don't have time to watch the deep dive? Check out the expert video that provides a concentrated dose of knowledge here:    • Floating Offshore Wind: Past the Demo Stag...   In this episode: How a floating wind turbine stays in place, and why bottom-fixed foundations stop making sense in deep water What floating wind can learn from the oil and gas sector Where the market stands today, and which countries are leading The outlook for floating wind in France Why floating wind still costs more than bottom-fixed wind: ports, vessels, dynamic cables and moorings Assembly in port, and why it can also be an advantage Environmental impact: the wake effect, the artificial reef effect, underwater noise and mitigation Why there are so many floater designs, and what standardisation could unlock What the supply chain, governments and investors each need to do Life cycle emissions and the hotspots still to tackle Jobs, skills and local communities Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:39 What makes floating wind fascinating 1:49 Why we need floating wind 2:48 How a floating turbine stays in place 3:58 Why bottom-fixed foundations stop at depth 6:05 Lessons from oil and gas 6:54 Where the market stands today 9:06 The frontrunner countries 10:26 The outlook in France 12:22 Cost and bottlenecks 15:13 Dynamic power cables 16:53 Ports and assembly 18:17 The upside of assembling in port 19:43 Environmental impact and marine life 22:45 Operational noise 24:38 Floater designs and standardisation 27:17 The supply chain 28:33 Permitting, financing and the role of government 31:06 Investor interest 32:42 Life cycle emissions 34:51 Jobs and local communities 37:10 Wrap-up Are you working on floating wind and want to talk it through?
