Everybody says you can't retire in New England on a budget, and mostly they're right. Not in these 10 towns, where a normal Social Security check still covers a house and a hospital.
The brochure sells you October. January sends the bill. So every house is counted in years of an average Social Security check, and every town comes with its catch: a long winter, a heavy tax bill, a flood map, a well to test, Bike Week, or a long drive to the big hospital.
Number 1 has all three: a home under half its state's price, a trauma center 4 minutes out, and up to $2,820 a year back from the state once you're 65.
Towns in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts, from the Great North Woods to the Berkshires.

Before you buy anywhere on this list:
1. Look the address up on the FEMA flood map and price the insurance before the offer.
2. Ask for 12 months of heating bills, and have a technician check the tank and the line to the burner.
3. Drive from the house to the ER door in January, and ask that hospital what it sends out and where.
4. Get the assessment card and the last tax bill, plus your state's heating help and when it opens.
Houlton at $160,000 and 2 hours to Bangor, or Pittsfield at $308,000 and 4 minutes to a trauma center? Tell me which one you'd take in the comments, and which state you'd be moving from.
