Our picnic starts at 10 a.m. and finishes at 1 p.m. Is that nine hours?
No! Lay the day out on the hour line, hop one hour at a time, and find out.
WHAT THIS TEACHES
Elapsed time across noon: how many hours from a morning time to an
afternoon time. After 12 the clock numbers start again at 1, so taking
away gives the wrong answer (10 - 1 = 9, but it is 3 hours). Instead we hop along
a straight hour line, one hour at a time - amber hops before noon, blue hops
after - and use one trick: hop to noon, then keep going, then add them up
(9 a.m. to 2 p.m. is 3 + 2 = 5 hours). Also: when does it finish? (start time
plus how long), spotting Pip's take-away mistakes, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
WHO IT IS FOR
6 and 7 year olds - first grade and second grade, Year 1 and Year 2 -
who can read o'clock times and know a.m. and p.m. There is a real pause
after every question so your child can answer out loud.

BEST FOR: elapsed time, how long something lasts, and time word problems.
Afterwards, ask 'what time did we leave, and what time did we get home?'
and hop it together.
More on the same clock: o'clock, half past, quarter past and to, five
minutes, how long until, and a.m. and p.m. are in the Maths playlist.
