Story time starts at 10:45 a.m. and finishes at 1 p.m. Ten, eleven, twelve, one - is that three hours? No! A little quarter hop, then whole hops along the hour line: two and a quarter hours. WHAT THIS TEACHES Elapsed time with quarter hours. The hour line now has a mark at every quarter hour (15 minutes). When a trip starts at quarter past or quarter to, take a PART HOP to the o'clock first, then whole hops; when it ends on a quarter, finish with a part hop. Then add them up (10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. is 1/4 + 2 = 2 1/4 hours; 9:15 a.m. to noon is 3/4 + 2 = 2 3/4 hours). Four quarter hours make one whole hour. Also: when does it finish? (start time plus how long), spotting Pip's counting mistakes, and one long day out, 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. WHO IT IS FOR 6 and 7 year olds - first grade and second grade, Year 1 and Year 2 - who can read quarter past and quarter to and know a.m. and p.m. There is a real pause after every question so your child can answer out loud.
