A NOAA ship lowers a camera into the ocean. The deeper it goes, the stranger the footage gets, because the ocean isn't one place. It's five zones stacked on top of each other, and every one has creatures with abilities that sound made up.
This video goes down through all five, from the sunlight zone to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and shows what lives in each and how it survives.

WHAT SHOWS UP IN THIS VIDEO
▸ The five ocean zones: sunlight, twilight, midnight, abyssal, and hadal.
▸ Lanternfish: fish that glow to erase their own shadow, then join the largest animal migration on Earth every night.
▸ The anglerfish and giant tube worms: glowing bacteria in one, chemistry-powered life in the other.
▸ The dumbo octopus: filmed at 6,957 meters in 2020, the first octopus seen in the deepest zone.
▸ The Mariana snailfish and its TMAO molecule: the chemistry that keeps its proteins from collapsing under pressure.

WHERE THIS COMES FROM
▸ NOAA Ocean Exploration and the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, the only U.S. federal ship built purely for deep-sea exploration.
▸ Mackenzie Gerringer and the University of Washington's Friday Harbor Laboratories, who formally named the Mariana snailfish.
▸ Paul Yancey of Whitman College, whose TMAO research points to a depth limit for fish.
▸ Cornell University research (2019) on where the anglerfish's glowing bacteria come from.
▸ The 1977 Galápagos Rift vent discovery, made from the Woods Hole submersible Alvin.
