A slow-moving nor'easter cut off Hatteras Island, North Carolina, after flooding undermined Highway 12 at Pea Island, the only road to the mainland. Roughly 100,000 customers across the Northeast had lost power by Saturday, according to NOAA.
NOAA described a powerful nor'easter with damaging wind gusts and dangerous coastal flooding from the Carolinas northward, and an 81-mph gust was recorded at Montauk Point, New York. New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency.
One person was killed by a falling tree in Brooklyn, while crews rescued people from cars and flooded motel rooms in New Jersey and ferries ran an emergency route to Hatteras Island on Sunday. New Jersey's Mikie Sherrill said power had been restored to nearly 180,000 homes.
In this video, we examine how Highway 12 failed at Pea Island, the outages and rescues from New Jersey to New England, and why Hatteras keeps losing homes.
