Lakshmi Kanchi – Backyard Truth-Telling Series – Walyalup 2026 & First Stories

This story was shared by Lakshmi Kanchi at Backyard Truth-Telling Series in Walyalup/Fremantle in 2026. Here, Lakshmi shares a story about the voices and stories that have historically been hidden or overlooked in Australia, challenging the idea about which stories, songs and experiences are considered ‘Australian’ today. All copyright of the story belongs to the storyteller and has been licensed to Centre for Stories. This project was funded by Lotterywest & City of Fremantle. First Stories and Solid Connections is a two-year truth-seeking and truth-listening project run in partnership between Centre for Stories, First Nations and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities across Western Australia.
