ABOUT THE SONG “Promises You Can’t Keep” is a reflection on political promises and the uneasy relationship between hope, trust and disappointment in American public life. The song looks at how easily big promises can be made — and how much harder they are to live up to once the speeches are over. Rather than focusing on a particular politician or party, it asks a broader question about what we should expect from the people who ask for our trust. At its heart, “Promises You Can’t Keep” is about skepticism without surrendering hope: wanting something better, while learning to be wary of anyone who promises more than they can possibly deliver. LYRICS I've been showing up for fifteen years I've done my best to do my part Every Friday brings me hope Monday empties out my heart Groceries, gas, prescriptions Feels like we’re more and more behind Commercials say you're fighting for us I guess we're just hard to find Don't promise me the moon That's a promise you can't keep Don't tell me I'm better off 'Cause I know what I see Stop making up the numbers Two plus two ain't eight Stop making empty promises They're promises you can't keep They're promises you can't keep Dear Mr. Congressman Since you're asking for my vote Can you tell me honestly How we're supposed to cope Seems there's always money somewhere At least for spending on campaigns But it never finds its way to us Signed, Beginning to Lose Faith Don't promise me the moon That's a promise you can't keep Don't tell me I'm better off 'Cause I know what I see Stop making up the numbers Two plus two ain't eight Stop making empty promises They're promises you can't keep They're promises you can't keep Shake hands and keep your word That's a basic contract Earn it before you spend it That's just basic math You keep telling us what we need Without asking how we're living You keep telling us you hear us But you never seem to listen Don't promise me the moon That's a promise you can't keep Don't tell me I'm better off 'Cause I know what I see Stop making up the numbers Two plus two ain't eight Stop making empty promises They're promises you can't keep I'm Beginning to Lose Faith And those are promises you can't keep CREDITS Written by Stacey Alan Renner Vocals and music created using generative AI tools. © 2026 Stacey Alan Renner.
