In the First Age, Morgoth's orcs besieged a small stockade of Men for seven days. Tolkien gave it one paragraph. This is that last stand, and the woman who held it: Haleth. THE STORY In the First Age, the Haladin, a small and stubborn people of Men, settled in Thargelion, below the land of the Elf-lord Caranthir. Morgoth sent orcs against them. Their chieftain Haldad gathered his people behind a stockade in the angle of the rivers Ascar and Gelion. He fell leading them, and his son Haldar fell beside him, trying to save his father's body. His daughter Haleth picked up her father's sword. For seven days she held the stockade with fewer and fewer defenders, until the host of Caranthir came down from the north and drove the orcs into the rivers. Caranthir offered her recompense for her father and brother, and free land under the protection of the Elves. She thanked him and refused. She led what was left of her people west, out of the shadow of the mountains, and was their chieftain for the rest of her life. From then on they were called the People of Haleth. WHY SHE IS A REAL HERO What makes Haleth heroic is not that she is a warrior princess who wins every fight. She is not fearless and she is not invincible. She watches her father and her brother die in front of her. In the worst hour of her life she finds the strength and the determination to stand up, take command and hold. Her people follow her not because she is the best fighter on the wall, but because she does not break. That is strength: not the absence of fear or grief, but the decision to keep going through it. DIRECTOR'S NOTE: THE LONGER VERSION With more time, I would tell the darker side of her story. In the moment her father needs her, Haleth hesitates, and her father and brother die. She learns the hardest lesson a leader can learn: she may never waver again. And it costs her. The siege leaves her hard and cold; she can no longer accept help or comfort, which is why she turns down the Elf-lord's silver and his protection. A strong character is allowed to fail. Her strength is what she becomes after. Would you watch that longer version? Tell me in the comments. THE SONG HOLD THE LINE is an epic power metal anthem for the defenders of the stockade. For fans of Blind Guardian, Sabaton, Iced Earth, Nightwish, Rhapsody of Fire, Hammerfall and Tolkien metal. About this project: the music is based on my own song and was produced with AI tools (Suno); the images were created with AI image generation and animated. Haleth, Haldad, Haldar, Caranthir and the Haladin come from Tolkien's The Silmarillion ("Of the Coming of Men into the West"); the Orc Commander, the Old Spearman and the details of the battle are our own interpretation.
