Set Up My Desk in the Middle of a Cathedral Because My Thoughts Needed the Ceiling

I moved the desk to the middle of the cathedral. Not because anyone told me to. Not because the light was better there, though the light was, in fact, extraordinary — coming through the stained glass in long gold columns, landing on the stone floor the way history lands on a life, slowly, and from a great height. I moved it because my thoughts had grown too big for the room I had. You know the feeling. You sit down at a small desk in a small apartment to work on something that is quietly enormous to you, and the ceiling starts to press down on the top of your head, and the walls stand too close, and your project — which deserves cathedrals — is being asked to fit inside a shoebox. So I carried the desk down the nave. Nobody stopped me. Cathedrals, it turns out, are generous with their floor space in the late afternoon, when the tourists have gone and only the pigeons and the saints remain. I sat down. I opened the book. I began. And for the first time in a long time, my sentences had somewhere to rise to. I think a lot of us are working in rooms that are smaller than what we are trying to say. We are drafting manifestos at kitchen tables. We are composing symphonies in parked cars. We are grieving in cubicles. We are falling in love over text messages in rooms with popcorn ceilings. And then we wonder why the work feels compressed. Why the feeling comes out smaller than it was inside. Why we cannot seem to find the full size of our own voice. The cathedral did not make my work better. Let me be honest about that. The sentences were the same sentences. The ideas were the same ideas. But the ceiling was tall enough that my thoughts could stand up all the way without hitting their heads. That turned out to matter. That turned out to matter a great deal. You do not need a cathedral. You need whatever your cathedral is. A library. A park bench with a view of water. A table by a window where the sky is doing most of the talking. A quiet hour before anyone else is awake, which is a kind of cathedral built out of time instead of stone. Give your work a room that is a little too big for it. Let it grow into the space. Let it finally be the size it has been all along. The music under this video is for the long afternoon in the big room. For the sentence that needed a vaulted ceiling. For the thought that had been crouching and is finally allowed to stand. ──────────────────── Press play. Let your work be the size it actually is. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ A still haven for the mind that needs to pause. New sounds, regularly.
