i walked past this painting for the first time when i was nineteen.
i did not stop. i was on my way to something i believed was more important —
a class, a boy, a version of myself i was in a hurry to arrive at.
the philosophers on the wall did not seem to mind. they had been there a long time.
they would still be there when i circled back, if i ever did.
i circled back today. it took forty-seven years.
the man in the center is still reading from his scroll.
the students around him are still leaning in, still writing things down,
still, occasionally, disagreeing. the light behind him has not moved.
that is the deal you make with a painting like this —
it stays exactly where you left it, so that you can find out, one day,
exactly how far you have moved.
i sat down on the bench, which is new. the bench was not here in 1978.
someone, at some point, decided people my age might want to sit for a while.
i am grateful to that person. i do not know their name.
i suspect they had also spent some years walking too quickly past things.
what surprised me, sitting there today, was how many of the faces i recognized.
not from paintings. from life. the young man on the left, taking notes,
was every student i had ever taught. the older man on the right,
listening with his head tilted, was every mentor i had ever had.
the philosopher in the middle, reading aloud, was every voice
i had ever tried, and mostly failed, to slow down enough to hear.
this, i think, is the quiet gift of getting older.
the paintings stop being about strangers. they become populated
by everyone who has ever loved you, taught you, or waited for you
to be still enough to receive what they had already been trying to say.
i did not learn anything new today. i recognized things.
i suspect the difference between those two verbs is what a life is actually for.
when i left, the philosophers were still teaching.
i, finally, was old enough to listen.
🕯 best experienced with headphones, in low light, alone.
