For generations, people across Florida have reported a mysterious black cat moving through forests, swamps, and dark country roads. They called it the Florida “black panther.” There was only one problem: no black Florida panther — or black cougar anywhere in North America — has ever been scientifically confirmed. Then, in September 2025, a black wild cat appeared on a public trail in Northwest Florida. Florida wildlife officials identified it as a melanistic bobcat. But that answer created an even stranger mystery. For decades, confirmed black bobcats in Florida had followed a remarkable geographic pattern concentrated much farther south. The Lynn Haven animal appeared hundreds of miles outside that pattern. And Florida is not the only place where this happens. Almost 2,000 miles away, another cluster of black bobcats has appeared in the cold forests of New Brunswick, Canada. Why? In this episode of Invasive America, we follow more than 80 years of records, museum specimens, trail-camera evidence, genetics, and one of Florida’s most persistent wildlife legends.
