Harpoons, fish hooks and a family buried on a bed of flowers in the middle of the Sahara, and whales with legs lying in the Egyptian desert. Here is what the sand really hides. We go through eight finds, one by one, and for each we ask the same thing: what was found, why it looks impossible, and which detail finally explains it. We start with a Stone Age cemetery of lakeside fishermen in Niger and the painted "swimmers" of Egypt's Gilf Kebir. Then we follow an eight-thousand-year-old canoe found at the bottom of a well to a lost lake bigger than the Caspian Sea. Ancient genomes from Libya reveal who lived in the green Sahara, and space shuttle radar reveals rivers buried under the sand. Deeper in time, we meet Spinosaurus, a river predator of the Cretaceous, and the legged whales of Wadi al-Hitan. We finish on the floor of the Atlantic, where the sediment shows how many times the Sahara has turned green. Sources: Kuper R., Kröpelin S. (2006).
