🇬🇧 English Description
In the third lecture of «Principles of Propulsion», we first had a brief review of «Rayleigh and Fanno flows» and then moved to the important topic of «shock waves». Normal and oblique shocks, their characteristics, and their formation and applications in compressible and supersonic flows were discussed.
We also examined situations in which shock waves can be intentionally used as a useful aerodynamic phenomenon, particularly in supersonic and space-related applications. We then discussed the design of shock patterns in the inlets and nozzles of supersonic engines and how the shock pattern can be shaped and controlled as part of the engine design process.
After completing the first part of the course, we started the second section. In this section, we introduced the book by «Ahmed Said» as the main reference. Chapter 1 was considered for independent reading, while the main discussion started from Chapter 2, focusing on the «performance parameters of jet engines».
The major performance parameters of jet engines were introduced, and by developing a simple analytical model and applying the required governing equations, we derived a simplified expression for «jet-engine thrust». The different components of the thrust equation were then explained, including the «momentum thrust» and «pressure thrust» components.
We also examined «momentum drag» and «pressure drag» within the analytical model and discussed the importance of the pressure term in the thrust equation. Different operating conditions were considered, including cases where the nozzle exit pressure is equal to or different from the ambient atmospheric pressure, and how this pressure difference affects the overall engine thrust.
This lecture provides an important connection between compressible and supersonic-flow concepts and the practical performance analysis of jet engines, establishing the foundation for a more detailed study of propulsion-system performance parameters and thrust.@DrTogh
