🇬🇧 English Description
Turbomachinery – Lecture 2 | Introduction to Turbines, Euler Equation and Degree of Reaction
In the second lecture of the Turbomachinery course, we introduce the fundamental concepts of turbines and examine their basic configuration and operating principles.
The lecture begins with the applications of turbines and the fundamental differences between turbines and compressors. We then introduce the basic arrangement of a turbine stage, including the stator, rotor, stationary blade row, and rotating blade row, and explain how these components are arranged within a turbine stage.
The lecture then focuses on the fundamentals of energy transfer in turbines. The Euler turbomachinery equation for turbines is derived and explained, followed by a discussion of the turbine power equation and its relationship with the change in angular momentum of the flow.
Finally, we introduce the concept of the Degree of Reaction, discussing its role in the distribution of enthalpy drop and expansion between the stator and rotor of a turbine stage.
Topics covered:
Turbine applications
Turbines vs. compressors
Turbine stage configuration
Stator and rotor
Stationary and rotating blade rows
Energy transfer in turbines
Euler Turbomachinery Equation
Turbine Power Equation
Angular Momentum
Degree of Reaction
