The Shizuoka Railway is a private railway line running 11.6 km between Shizuoka City (population 660,000) and Shimizu City (population 230,000). The line originated as a horse-drawn railway founded in 1905, planned to transport tea produced around Shizuoka City to Shimizu Port. Ultimately, the line opened as a railway in 1908 and was electrified in 1920. While the company initially operated several lines, the current 11.6 km section remained. Currently, the entire line is double-tracked, and two-car trains operate, making it a typical suburban private railway. The "Shin" in the station names means "new," and since both Shizuoka Station and Shimizu Station also have JR stations, the Shizuoka Railway stations have "Shin" added to their names. This is a common practice in Japanese station and town names. Mount Fuji can be seen from several locations along the line, though not very large due to the distance.
