Rāvaṇa seized Sītā by the hair with one hand and by the thighs with the other.
That isn't an exaggerated retelling. It's how Maharṣi Vālmīki describes the abduction, in the Araṇya Kāṇḍa.
वामेन सीतां पद्माक्षीं मूर्धजेषु करेण सः ।
ऊर्वोस्तु दक्षिणेनैव परिजग्राह पाणिना ॥
vāmena sītāṃ padmākṣīṃ mūrdhajeṣu kareṇa saḥ |
ūrvos tu dakṣiṇenaiva parijagrāha pāṇinā ||
With his left hand he seized lotus-eyed Sītā by the hair; with his right, he took her by the thighs.
(Araṇya Kāṇḍa 49.17; critical edition 3.47.16)
Read the original text and you find a darker Rāmāyaṇa than most adaptations show: Rāvaṇa threatening to have Sītā cut up in his kitchen, a severed head conjured by illusion to break her, fourteen thousand rākṣasas falling before one man, Kumbhakarṇa devouring warriors, and Jaṭāyu dying for trying to save her. We often ask filmmakers to show Vālmīki's story exactly as it was written. This film asks what that would really mean, and what should survive the violence.
Viewer note: the film describes violence from the text. The art is stylised cut-paper animation, with no graphic imagery.
