Effective early years practice depends on a continuous cycle of reflection and adaptation. This lesson explains how practitioners can review evidence, identify gaps and make purposeful changes while keeping each child’s needs and development at the centre. You will explore three practical examples: using time sampling to gather more consistent evidence about language development; broadening assessment to include social-emotional skills alongside cognitive development; and adapting activities to match a child’s interests without changing the intended developmental goal. The lesson also considers common barriers to reflective practice, including limited time, resistance to change, restricted resources and inconsistent feedback. Practical responses include building reflection into daily routines, encouraging a culture of continuous improvement, finding low-cost solutions and creating regular feedback with families and colleagues. The key process is simple: notice an issue, reflect on why it matters, adapt the observation method, assessment or activity, and then review what happens next.
