Step off at Tobu Kinugawa Onsen Station and you're in the town. About two hours by limited express from Asakusa — close enough for a day trip from Tokyo. The water is an alkaline simple spring: clear, mild and soft on the skin. It was found in the Edo period, when it was called "Taki-no-yu" and only monks and feudal lords on pilgrimage to Nikko were permitted to bathe. It opened to the public in the Meiji era and grew into one of the Kanto region's largest hot spring towns.
