Every time she smells the sulfur, she thinks she can hear their voices. She still remembers the day they bought her a steamed bun. She comes alone now. But they are the ones who brought her here. They are gone, and yet they seem to be inside this smell. The young couple from back then, and her today, in the same water. On the way home she bought one kokeshi doll. She isn't sure it looks like anyone — but the smile reminded her a little of her grandmother. Not a sad song. When the trees clinging to its cliffs turn color it becomes one of Japan's great autumn views. Best from late October to early November. ♨️ About Naruko Onsen Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture. Step off the train at JR Naruko Onsen Station and you are already in the hot spring town. Five areas — Naruko, Higashi-Naruko, Kawatabi, Nakayamadaira and Onikobe — together form the Naruko hot spring region. Its great feature is variety. Nine of the eleven spring types recognized in Japan are said to be found here, so the color and smell of the water change from bath to bath: sulfur springs, iron springs, bicarbonate springs. That is why people come here specifically to move between baths. The other face of the town is the kokeshi doll.
