Tree lighting Thursday, November 19 at 6 p.m. Santa Claus Parade Saturday, November 21 at 6 p.m. House decorating contest December 1 to 13. Stephanie Hudson of the Mallorytown parade committee has the details.
Jeanette Johnston sits down with Stephanie, a volunteer on the five-person committee behind the Mallorytown Santa Claus Parade, which Stephanie says has been running since around 1986. They go through all three holiday events, what happens at each one, and what the committee still needs.
KEY DATES
Tree lighting: Thursday, November 19, 6 p.m., Township Building. Free hot chocolate and treats, carolers from the Caintown Choir, and the kids hang a non-breakable ornament on the already-lit tree. Done by about 7 p.m.
Santa Claus Parade: Saturday, November 21, 6 p.m.
House decorating contest: December 1 to 13. Leave your lights on until about 10 p.m. so people can drive by. Enter by email or by the phone number on your mailed flyer, and your house goes on a map. Prizes are before Christmas; the committee is still working out the details.
DATE MIX-UP: If you have seen the fire department calendar, it lists the parade on November 28. The correct date is November 21 at 6 p.m. Stephanie explains why in the episode.
Flyers for all three events are coming in the mail.
ALSO COVERED
Why the parade runs at night again, and the Santa meet and greet
The food bank side-by-side that rides in the parade. Non-perishables are welcome, and Stephanie says the food bank especially needs pet food, personal hygiene items and diapers
How to be in the parade yourself, as a business or an individual. There is no theme this year, only lights and music
WANT TO HELP?
The committee will take any help: finding sponsors, calling groups to join the parade, lining up floats, setting up beforehand. Stephanie says it is laid back, no pressure, and you are welcome to come out and see how it works first.
