Rob Matare - Streetlights (Official Lyric Visualizer)

Streetlights by Rob Matare is a nostalgic hip hop song about childhood best friends who drifted apart, and the knock that brings them back together. From the album Run That By Me. They rode bikes with no brakes down a hill they named Mercy Slide and wore their scabs like badges. His friend fronted him a dollar for lemonade cups: pay me when we're famous. A folded paper fortune teller said they would both be legends. When rent ran late, his friend split his plate. Then the river bent and they drifted, no fight, just silence, and a birthday in October with no text. Now he is parked at the old corner under the same flickering streetlight, foot on the brake, a coward in the dark. He cuts the engine and knocks. The door opens on a gray-bearded man who laughs, pulls him in with a shoulder bump, and digs a knotted sock out of a drawer: the lemonade dollar, folded, never forgotten. Turns out he had parked at this curb the Christmas before and chickened out too. “We were never stars, man, we were the light in the place.” This visualizer is a heartfelt rap song about friendship, regret and the courage to say sorry plainly. For anyone missing a childhood friend, a brother from the old block, or a porch light that is still on. Who is the friend you need to call?
