Released in 1980, “Dancing with Myself” is one of the best-known tracks from British punk and new wave band Generation X, fronted by Billy Idol alongside bassist Tony James. Written by Idol and James and produced by Keith Forsey, the song was inspired by a trip to Japan, where they witnessed young clubgoers dancing with their own reflections in mirrored walls.
Released on Chrysalis Records, “Dancing with Myself” reached No. 60 on the UK Singles Chart. Combining the raw energy of punk with a driving dance beat, sharp guitars and an instantly memorable chorus, the track signalled the transition from late-’70s punk toward the more polished new wave and dance-rock sound of the early ’80s. Billy Idol later re-recorded and reissued the song during his solo career, helping turn it into one of his signature anthems. (Chrysalis Records).
