David Gems: Theories and Mechanisms of Aging, Adaptive Stress Responses, and Healthspan

We all age and die. There have been several theories of aging including that the aging process is genetically programmed, that aging involves a progressive deterioration of cell components caused by free radicals, the antagonistic pleiotropy theory, and the disposable soma theory. In this episode I talk with UCL geneticist and biogerontologist David Gems about general theories of aging, mechanisms of aging, epigenetic clocks, and the relationships between aging, disease, and death. David discusses research findings in his own laboratory that have revealed mechanisms of aging and death in the roundworm C. elegans.
