Painted Mountain (Red Mountain) - Washington State

Painted Mountain (officially recorded as Red Mountain) is a 6,981-foot peak in Washington’s North Cascades along the Mountain Loop Highway. Known for its striking red scree slopes, the mountain rewards hikers with sweeping 360-degree views of Glacier Peak, Sloan Peak, and the glaciers of Pride Basin. We’ve seen Glacier Peak from many summits over the years, but the view from Painted Mountain is, without question, the most spectacular. Reaching the summit is no easy feat. The strenuous route gains nearly 5,000 vertical feet and requires solid navigation and route-finding skills. A steep section of loose scree near the top adds an extra challenge, making the final push both demanding and rewarding. Camping on the summit was the highlight of the trip. Watching the surrounding peaks glow in the colors of sunset and sunrise, with Glacier Peak front and center, was unforgettable.
